So we tried the weekly menu changes… they were cool for a couple weeks but people kept coming in (particularly on Tuesday) looking for food from the week previous which we didn’t have.  The solution: keep the menu going until we come up with our Fall menu.  So, you’ll know what to expect every day of the week.  But wait… There’s more!  Check in on Facebook or Twitter for our daily lunch specials (3-4 days per week).  In addition to our regular menu, we’ll be throwing down some great additions!

Restaurant Review: Lopez in Cleveland Heights, Ohio

Date night – a rare and amazing species that is spotted very rarely these days.  With a two year old, an 8 week old and a 2 week old business, you have to take the bull by the horns whenever it happens to trot on by.  So with the sitter in place we happily drove out of the driveway with no plans and a few hours to kill.  Where should we go?  I had a hankering for a margarita and a patio – Lopez on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights fulfilled both the requirements.

Two big positives right off the bat were the valet parking (not a whole lot of parking on a very busy street) and the friendly hostesses.  We nabbed a table for two on the patio right before it got completely full and appreciated the attentive, helpful wait staff.  I thoroughly enjoyed my White Peach Margarita, a delicious choice on a hot evening, made from the real thing (no syrups here, folks).  Next up we split the Iron Chef Guacamole made with blue cheese, sage and bacon.  I recently met my first bacon guacamole at the Silver Spoon awards dinner a few weeks ago, and I must say; I’m in love.  Though Lopez’s version was perfectly pleasant, it really doesn’t hold a candle to the one I tried from Bac (an Asian-American bistro & bar located in Tremont).  The bacon was crumbled on top, not really infused into the flavor of the guac, and the blue cheese chunks were way too big.

The Chubby Cook ordered two small plates as his main course and I an entree.  My blue corn battered soft shell crab tacos with mango habenero salsa and lemon crema arrived on the plate looking very lonely.  No sides.  No extra salsa our crema.  Not even a lime wedge for a garnish.  Just two small soft shell tacos.  Poor little tacos.  Flavor wise they were good but nothing great to report.  On the other hand, The Chubby Cook was chowing down on some amazing shrimp’n'grits with corn and chile grits, smoked cheese, roasted pepper and scallion.  The texture of the grits was perfect and the level of heat was just right.  His second small plate, the southwest braised pork ribs with a spicy mango mop, creamy slaw and a parsnip tumbleweed, wasn’t so small.  Turns out the server was confused and put in a large plate order for the ribs.  The manager graciously accepted the mistake and only charged us for the small plate without hesitation.  Well done, Lopez, good customer service goes a long way.  The ribs were tasty but had some sort of weird spice that numbed my tongue upon first bite – not like spicy hot numb, just numb.  Kinda weird.

Though thoroughly satisfied, the server managed to sell us on an interesting sounding dessert that we just couldn’t pass up – a spicy beet chocolate truffle with strawberry preserve.  Beets and chocolate?  How could we resist?  Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much, so I was pleasantly surprised.  Man is this a good dessert.  It’s a layer of chocolate cake, then cream, then another layer of cake, then more cream with the strawberry preserves drizzled over the top.  There really is no beet flavor, but the beets do provide an incredible moisture to the cake without making it dense and heavy.  The touch of cayenne in the cake imparted a nice zing without being overpowering.  The cream was smooth and the preserves added that last touch of brightness that pulled the whole thing together.  We may have to return to Lopez sooner rather than later to dissect how they created such an interesting dessert…

Take Out Lunch for June 13 through 17

This week don’t pack your lunch- come in and get some food!  The menu will be on the calendar as well if you want to print it out.  Here’s the menu for this week:

Monday Sandwich: The California Veggie Taco: It’s packed up with our fresh hummus, our olive pesto, roasted red peppers, sprouts, thin sliced mini cucumbers and a ton of tomatoes.  It’s fresh and delicious!  Vegetarian and Vegan friendly.

Monday Salad: The Ginger Dragon:  We’ve put in fresh Napa Cabbage and Romaine Lettuce with toasted almonds & sesame seeds.   The crunch factor is raised with our flash seared ramen noodles, fresh chopped carrots, scallions and a sprinkling of cilantro.  Top it off with our Ginger Dragon Dressing.  This salad received rave reviews- Vegetarian and Vegan friendly.

Tuesday is Quiche Day:  We’re rockin’ out with two quiche options- choose either one and be sure to pick up a side salad to go with it!

  • Neuske’s Smoked Ham and Cheese:  Loaded up with ham, cheese and fresh scallions, this classic quiche is sure to please!
  • Summer Veggie Quiche: We love summer veggies and tossed a ton in this quiche…its got onions, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, roasted garlic and Parmesan cheese.

Wednesday Sandwich: The Big Gobbler: When you put this much turkey on a sandwich, it just has to be called big.  Piled high with juicy turkey on delicious rustic Italian bread, we add in a plum compote, some blue jack cheese (very mild and delicious), crispy lettuce and sweet summer tomatoes.

Wednesday Salad: The Farmer’s Market: It’s summer, we’re going to load up this salad with the season’s best offerings!

Thursday Sandwich: The Purple Haze: This wrap has Greek marinated eggplant, roasted red peppers, marinated artichoke hearts, feta crumbles, olive pesto & hummus with some green leaf lettuce.  We sold out of this one quickly last week!  Vegetarian friendly.

Thursday Salad: Chubb’s Cobb:  I love this salad.  It’s hearty and filling- that’s for sure.  We’ve loaded this up with caramelized onions, sauteed mushroom caps, vine ripe tomatoes, our signature bacon croutons, crumbled hardboiled eggs.  You’ll find a generous portion of our house made creamy blue cheese dressing included with this salad.

Friday Sandwich: PULLED PORK.  This is going to be an “assemble yourself” kinda sandwich so everything stays fresh.  It includes our house made pulled pork, our house made Chubb’s BBQ Sauce and our Carolina Coleslaw with a fresh brioche bun.  My suggestion is to pile on the pulled pork, smother it in the BBQ sauce and top it with the coleslaw.  Mmm… gonna be good.

Friday Salad: The Northeastern Southwestern:  This Southwestern style salad has it all… crisp romaine, grape tomatoes, green onions, black beans, roasted corn on the cob, pepitas (toasted pumpkin seeds), crushed tortilla chips, grated cheddar cheese (on the side) and cilantro.  It comes with our Smokey Chipotle Vinaigrette.  Vegetarian and vegan friendly options.  Get some pulled pork to put on this one to kick it up a notch, if you want.

Keep in mind that we are sampling new stuff every day this week.  Monday we are sampling our brownies, Tuesday will be our hummus, Wednesday is cheesecake, Thursday is tater salad and Friday is Cowboy George’s trio of salsas!

Hummus Party

Sweet.  We love hummus.  We love it enough to want to share it with everyone.

That’s what’s happening this Friday, June 10.  We’re having a Hummus Party.  Check it out:

Our House Hummus:  Creamy with just a hint of roasted garlic to tantalize your palette.  Currently not vegan friendly- we have made this hummus with some sour cream.  Our next batch will be vegan friendly made with some soy yogurt in the place of the sour cream.

Roasted Red Pepper Hummus: Just what the name says- it’s got some delicious roasted red peppers in there.  Our Director of Hummus, Dave, has added some naturally flavored oil into the mix that really makes this hummus pop.  This is a vegan friendly option.

Mediterranean Hummus: We’ve packed this hummus full of flavor with kalamata olives, artichoke hearts and roasted red peppers.  Vegan yo.

We’ve got pita and cut veggies to scoop up the goodness.  If you want some heat, there will be some cayenne hanging out as well.

If you like what you sample, pick up a tub while you’re there.  Limited quantities… like everything else, when we’re out, we’re out!

In the spirit of the Hummus Party- we’re featuring our California Veggie Tacos (formerly The Vegetarranian) as our daily feature.  Flatbread taco’s (we’re making 1/2 with veggie flatbread and 1/2 with plain flatbread) with fresh hummus, our house made olive pesto, roasted red peppers, fresh sprouts and thin sliced mini cucumbers.

Our next Hummus Party will be in 2 weeks.  We’re experimenting with a Jalapeño and Sauteed Onion Hummus, a Sundried Tomato and Arugula Hummus and my personal endeavor is to figure out our “Goddess” Hummus- think raw ginger, Bragg’s Liquid Amino’s and a healthy dose of fresh garlic.

We love food… and it shows.
